Where's Infinity Wars? What's Infinity Wars Classic? An Update from Lightmare Studios

Hey everyone, Agent Coyle here, and I’m excited that you’re here to check out the demo, but first, allow me to give you a bit of context, as there’s a lot that’s happened in the last few years worth mentioning.

So firstly, as you know, Infinity Wars 1 released in 2014, it was a great game, and we released expansion sets shortly after. Good times. What you may not have seen is that behind the scenes, we were a pretty inexperienced game dev company who had never taken on a project like this. This means we cut corners we didn’t even know existed. Every single card was hard coded, and no documentation was kept on what the code did, and why certain things worked certain ways. Now, this was just fine for a small team. If you don’t know what the code did, the guy that wrote it is sitting next to you and might be able to tell you. But… as the team expanded, we felt extreme growing pains.

Eventually, we signed with our Publisher and gave them full rights and control over everything, and they managed to make a new set of cards, however bug fixing was a nightmare, and most things that were added to the game somehow caused problems somewhere else. Eventually the game got to a pretty buggy state, and while it was semi stable, finishing the majority of games, that majority wasn’t vast, and desyncs caused big issues.

We kinda went quiet and got to work on what was next, however Infinity Wars 1 was on its last legs. We couldn’t do much with it, our publisher couldn’t do much with it, and as loudly as fans wanted more, we set ourselves up for failure years prior, and we were stuck. We eventually got IW1 back and continued to host the game while player numbers were painfully low, and when costs became too much, we took the hard decision of putting the servers on ice to save on costs.

We were working on Infinity Heroes, a simplified mobile to PC crossplay version of Infinity Wars, but Infinity Wars called to us…. Using the Infinity Card Engine we’d been working on, basically the back end system for our new card games, we got to work on creating a prototype for a technical remaster of Infinity Wars 1. We figured out a potential path to making Infinity Wars again, and making it well enough that we could continue to work on it and update the game well into the future.

The first version of the pre-alpha dropped with less than 50 cards, and a lot of stuff was broken… but it felt amazing to be playing Infinity Wars again. The reaction from our fans was so incredibly motivating, and after everything we’d been through… it felt like it was finally time to try and do the right thing, and bring back the Infinity Wars gameplay  we all know and love, doing it right this time, and making a card game we can all get behind.

Now, I need to mention that this playable demo we’re showing off is still an early access project, and it’s important you don’t set your expectations too high, but with huge lists of bug fixes and improvements being grinded out every month, we are proud enough of what we have to give you a taste, and when the game is finally ready, we’ll be going free to play, so everyone can jump back into the game they know and love, as well as play with their hard earned Infinity Wars 1 cards again.

For now, the full game is going to remain patreon exclusive, because it would be a bad idea to expose people to the full version of the game with much more volatility. With new features needing testing, bugs to be shot down, and some light balance changes and updates, it’s not ready for everyone yet. However, if you are one of the more passionate TCG fans looking to support Infinity Wars Classic, and wanting to dive right into some serious nostalgia in one of the most unique TCG’s out there, check out infinitywarsclassic.com . For everyone else though, you just being here is amazing, and I want to thank you for checking out what we’ve been up to. If you do have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out on Discord; as myself and the dev team are constantly chatting with our community, and we’d love to hear any feedback you may have. In the meantime though, I personally encourage you to take the Commander Medi out for a spin, and I hope you enjoy this demo experience for Infinity Wars Classic!
